This is a very special dish to me and has lots of childhood memories associated with it. Even today when my mom visits she makes sure she packs a big bundle of these. The recipe of Lola mentioned below is my mom's special recipe.I haven't had these from anywhere else, she used to cook and now I am cooking these to my daughter and trying to recreate the magic.
Ingredients
Wheat flour - 500 grams
Sugar - 500 grams
Poppy seeds (Khus khus) - 100 grams
Egg - 1 no:
Milk - 1/2 cup
Baking soda - a pinch
Cashew nuts - 10 - 15 no:s
Ghee - 2 tablespoons
Ghee or oil - for frying
Method
1. Soak the poppy seed and cashew nuts in warm water and grind it with a little water.
2. Then add the lightly beaten egg, milk, sugar, whole wheat flour, baking soda and the ground khus khus and cashew nut paste and mix everything with 2 tablespoons of ghee or clarified butter till a smooth dough is formed.
3. Divide them into equal sized balls and roll it out to a slightly thick disc ( not too thick though).
4. Cut into diamond shape and deep fry in ghee or oil in medium to low heat till brown.
5.Once they are cooled transfer to air tight container and will be good for up to a month.
